Before the canary trap had that name, cartographers were running their own version of it. They called the fake streets "trap streets" and the fake towns "paper towns." The logic was identical to Tom Clancy's intelligence technique: embed something false, distribute the result, and wait for the false thing to appear somewhere it shouldn't. When it does, you know who copied you.
The most famous example of this technique is a New York town that, for a brief period, was more real than fake.
Agloe, New York
In the 1920s, General Drafting Company founder Otto G. Lindberg and his assistant Ernest Alpers placed a fictitious town at a dirt-road intersection in the Catskill Mountains of New York. The location was real. The town was not.
They named it Agloe — an anagram of their initials: OGL and EA. The name was chosen to be unusual enough that any reappearance would be unmistakable. If a competitor's map showed Agloe, they had copied General Drafting. There was no other explanation.
A few years later, Rand McNally published a map that included Agloe. The trap had worked. The copy was confirmed.
That should be the end of the story. It isn't.
A shop owner had encountered the old General Drafting map — possibly an Exxon station giveaway using the same source data — and, assuming the map was accurate, opened a business at the Agloe intersection. He named it the Agloe General Store.
The fictional town had bootstrapped itself into existence. For the period that the Agloe General Store operated, Agloe was real enough that it qualified as a named place with a named business at a specific location. Later maps began including it with legitimacy — not as a copyright trap, but because there was actually something there to mark.
The store eventually closed. Agloe is no more. John Green used it as a central metaphor in his 2008 novel Paper Towns.
Trap streets
Trap streets are the smaller-scale version: fictitious roads, shortened alleys, or slightly misplaced features inserted into maps so that unauthorized copying of the map can be detected by the appearance of the false element in a competitor's product.
A trap street doesn't need to be plausible. It needs to be distinctive. A short dead-end road with a made-up name in a neighborhood where the mapmaker knows no such road exists is enough. If a competitor's product shows the street, they didn't survey the area. They copied the data.
The practice became especially common in the mid-20th century, when large map publishers competed for the same territory and unauthorized copying of survey data was both common and difficult to prove in court without evidence. A trap street provided the evidence.
Esquivalience and the Mountweasels
The same technique appeared in lexicography. Publishers of dictionaries and encyclopedias had the same problem as cartographers: their compiled data could be copied wholesale with minimal effort, and proving unauthorized use was nearly impossible without an embedded identifier.
The New Oxford American Dictionary added the word esquivalience in 2005, defined as "the wilful avoidance of one's official responsibilities." The word does not exist in English outside that definition. It was placed in the dictionary as a copyright trap: if any other reference work included the definition of esquivalience, they had copied the NOAD.
The broader category of these fictional entries is sometimes called "Mountweasel" entries, after a particularly elaborate example: the 1975 New Columbia Encyclopedia included an entry for Lillian Virginia Mountweazel, a fictitious person described as an American fountain designer and photographer who died in an explosion while on assignment for Combustibles magazine. The entry was entirely fabricated. The name was chosen to be memorable and traceable.
Any encyclopedia that included a biography of Lillian Virginia Mountweazel had not done its own research.
The structure these all share
Trap streets, paper towns, and fictitious dictionary entries are all canary traps by another name. The structure is constant — and the ethics of introducing false information to find a leaker apply whether the medium is a map or a conversation:
- The creator embeds something false that they control.
- They distribute the result containing the false element.
- If the false element appears in another context, that context must have used the original as a source.
- The unique false element provides the proof.
The only variable is the medium: geographic coordinates, dictionary definitions, encyclopedia biographies. The technique doesn't care about the medium. It cares about specificity — the false element must be unusual enough that its appearance elsewhere cannot be coincidence.

Why Does This Category of Trap Work?
It works because you control the false element, and the false element is the proof. Anyone who repeats it must have received it from you. The method requires no surveillance, no confrontation, and no accusation — the unique detail does the work when it echoes back.
The genius of the trap-street model is that it turns the act of copying into evidence of copying. The plagiarist can't strip out the trap without surveying the territory themselves — which is exactly what they were trying to avoid. To remove the trap street, you'd have to go to the Catskills and drive every road. To remove esquivalience, you'd have to have written an actual dictionary.
This is why digital-age cartography has complicated things. Crowdsourced mapping platforms like OpenStreetMap rely on contributors who live in the areas they map. A fake road is often caught quickly because local users recognize that the road doesn't exist. The distributed verification that makes OpenStreetMap accurate also makes it resistant to the kind of trap a sole publisher could run.
The technique flourishes in environments where verification is expensive and copying is cheap. When verification becomes cheap — because a thousand local contributors do it in parallel — the trap becomes unnecessary.
The part about your group chat
A trap street is a piece of false information embedded in a true document, unique enough to be recognized if it surfaces elsewhere. When you tell each friend a slightly different version of the same secret — a different salary figure, a different date, a slightly different detail — you're doing exactly what Otto Lindberg and Ernest Alpers did with Agloe.
Each friend carries a unique variant. When a version comes back from somewhere outside the circle, the variant identifies the carrier. What you do with that identification is a separate question — the trap only answers who, not what next. The Catskills are optional.
